Table Etiquette For Western Napkins

Before the Meal
1. After everyone is seated, the host or lady usually opens the napkin to signal the formal start of the meal. If it is a buffet, you can open the napkin immediately after being seated.
2. Napkins are usually placed on the center plate. If they are on the sides, your napkin should be on the left. If the napkin is in the cup, your napkin should be on the right.
3. Gently unfold your napkin. If it is a small napkin, fully unfold it and place it on your lap. Children or those who have difficulty eating can wrap the napkin around their neck.
4. If a napkin ring is provided, place it on the top left of the table. After starting your meal, pick up the napkin and put in through the ring. Place the napkin with the fold towards the center of the table.

During the Meal
1. Use the napkin to gently wipe your mouth periodically. Using a tissue is not considered good etiquette.
2. If you need to dispose of something in your mouth, cover your mouth with the napkin and discard the item directly onto the napkin. Then fold the napkin inward and place it on your left.
3. If you need to leave the table during the meal, fold the napkin and leave it on your chair.

After the Meal
1. When the meal is finished, the host or lady should be the first one to fold their napkin and place it on the table. This signals the end of the meal.
2. Before leaving the table, pick up the napkin from your lap, fold it with the dirty side inward and place it on the left side of the plate. Then get up and leave.

By understanding the table etiquette for Western napkins, one can demonstrate a refined sense of manners and create a pleasant dining experience for oneself and others.
